Use the Korg KA‑350 or a supply explicitly listed as Volca-compatible: 9V DC, enough current (≈600mA+), with the Korg/EIAJ‑03 barrel plug. The catch is that a Volca's plug size and polarity generally do not match a typical guitar-pedal supply — the wrong plug, polarity, or insufficient current will fail to power it or cause noise. Don't assume your pedalboard wart fits; confirm the spec against Korg's KA‑350 before plugging in.

Yes — the Volca's line output works into pedals, though it's line-level so a drive/reverb pedal may behave differently than with a guitar; a small gain/buffer helps. Stereo-image and noise vary by pedal. It's a popular way to thicken the Volca Drum/Bass.

Pajen's community firmware unlocks features the stock firmware hides — e.g. polyphony and extra parameters on the Volca FM, and tweaks on the Sample. It's widely used and reversible (you can reflash stock), but flashing is at your own risk: follow the guide, use a clean audio path, and back up first.

Use Korg's Sample Librarian app (or the audio-transfer method) to send WAVs to the unit over the headphone/line connection from a phone/computer — it's an audio-data transfer, not a USB drive. Keep samples short; the Volca Sample has limited memory and sample slots.

Use the Sync In/Out (3.5mm) for analog pulse sync between Volcas and compatible gear (Pocket Operators, Pocket Operators, etc.), or MIDI In for clock/notes from a sequencer. For a DAW, send sync via a MIDI-to-sync interface or a device that outputs the pulse. Mixing MIDI clock and analog sync requires a converter.

Use the logue SDK to build a unit (or download a community one), then load it with Korg's Librarian/Sound Editor over USB. The logue synths accept user oscillators and effects — this is the single best reason to own one for sound-design tinkerers.

Depends on the gap: Volca Sample for chopped samples/beats, Drum for synthesized percussion, Bass/Keys for analog mono/poly lines, FM for DX‑style tones, Modular for patchable experimentation. They sync together, so most people build a small ensemble around a sequencer (or a Volca with a strong sequencer).

The original Sample is cheaper and still capable (especially with Pajen firmware); the Sample 2 adds more sample memory and sequencing/feature improvements. Both load samples by transfer from a computer/phone, not by sampling a live input. So pick v1 + community firmware if you want it cheap, or Sample 2 for more room and the newer features.

Start from a single oscillator, low cutoff with modest resonance, short or no LFO, and a tight envelope; back off drive. Document the knob positions on a patch sheet so you can recall it — the Volcas don't save analog knob state, which is why patch sheets are essential.

Volcas take 6×AA. If the PSU works but batteries don't: check orientation and that the contacts aren't corroded or bent, use fresh batteries (low/unequal cells drop below the needed voltage), and note that some units prioritise the DC jack when a supply is plugged in (unplug it to run on batteries). Rechargeables' lower voltage (1.2V vs 1.5V) can also leave it underpowered.

Yes. Sample memory is limited, so manage it per project: load only the samples a track needs and clear the rest via the Sample Librarian / transfer tool. Keep a master library on your computer and treat the device as the working set. This avoids "out of memory" and keeps load/transfer fast.

The internal clock retimes when you move the tempo, and during rapid changes it can briefly drift before settling — and free-running Volcas in an ensemble will each retime slightly differently. For tight, repeatable tempo across gear, drive everything from one external clock (analog Sync or MIDI clock from a sequencer/DAW) rather than each unit's internal tempo.

Most Volcas have no USB — connect the 5‑pin MIDI IN to the computer through a USB‑MIDI interface (and/or use the 3.5mm Sync jacks for clock). To get samples onto a Volca Sample you use Korg's audio-data transfer (Sample Librarian) over the headphone/line connection, not a drive. The newer Volca FM2 adds a USB‑C MIDI port, so it can talk to the computer directly. So: older Volca = MIDI interface; FM2 = USB‑C.

Not as a dedicated knob. The Volca Bass envelope is a simple gate-based EG (attack + decay/release) — there's no separate ADSR sustain-level control. The note holds at full level while the gate is open, and the EG INT + Decay/Release shape how it opens and falls. For more sustain, lengthen the gate (note length) and back off the decay; for a plucky sound, shorten them.

Use motion sequencing: with the sequence playing, enable motion record and move the knobs — the Volca captures the knob automation onto the existing steps without you having to re-enter notes. So lay your notes down first, then do a separate motion-record pass for the parameter sweeps. Clear motion separately if you want to redo just the automation.

Daisy-chain the analog Sync: clock source → Volca 1 Sync In, then Volca 1 Sync Out → Volca 2 Sync In, and so on. Each Volca passes the pulse along, so you can chain several from one Keystep/clock. If you'd rather star-distribute, use a 3.5mm trigger/sync splitter. (MIDI clock can drive them too via a MIDI-to-sync converter.)

No — to play and monitor you just need headphones or powered speakers on the audio out (the Volcas even have a built-in speaker). You only need an audio interface to record the analog output into a computer: these are analog instruments with no USB audio (their USB, where present, carries power/MIDI, not audio). So headphones or monitors are enough to jam; add an interface (or a mixer/recorder) to capture the sound into a DAW.
